Systems in Art and Music by Michael Parsons
This article talked about the relationship between "systems artists" and experimental composers and musicians of the 1970's. The system artists of this period are described as limiting themselves to the most basic materials while also following a set of predetermined rules in the creation of an artwork. Similarly, the experimental musicians composed music in which "numbers, both in series and in random distribution within specified limits, are used to determine bar lengths, the rate of expansion or contraction of a figure, the number of repeats, and so on." In both the artwork and the music there is an interesting exchange between the preplanned limits of the composition and the unexpected elements that arised. I was interested to learn that from 1973-1975 the Lucy Milton Gallery provided a venue for the musicians to come and perform while also exhibiting the artwork of the systems artists. Some of the artists mentioned:
Malcolm Hughs (British Constructivist)
Michael Kidner (Pioneer of Op Art)
Peter Lowe (British Constructivist/Systems Art)
